Foot Odour

Anyone can have smelly feet- a loved one, family member, best friend, co-worker, even yourself. Some people are more susceptible than others, but why is that?

Foot odor is rarely subtle and can fill a room in an instant if you have been standing all day long. It is so embarrassing, terrifying and damaging to anyone’s confidence, and also affects footwear choices.

Sweat is often blamed for this. However, perspiration is not the only cause of bad odors. Bacteria can hide on your feet and in your shoes if these are not properly cared for with products that reduce wetness.

Scholl Fresh Step Anti-perspirant Foot Spray & Scholl Step Shoe Spray directly solves the problem of sweaty feet head-on to stop bad odour in its tracks.

Why do feet perspire?

There are about 250,000 sweat glands on the skin of your feet – more than any other part of your body. Sweat is perfectly natural, keeping the skin soft and flexible and controlling the temperature of your feet. Anybody can get sweaty feet, but people who are standing all day, or who are under stress, may find their feet sweat more than others.[1] Both feet can produce as much as half-a-pint of sweat a day, which creates a perfect breeding ground for bacteria that thrive in warm, moist conditions.

Does perspiration cause bad odours?

People often think that sweat is the cause of bad odours, but it isn’t. Odour is produced by bacteria which grow in shoes due to the heat and humidity. They attack and decompose sweat molecules and releases bad smell.

How to prevent bad foot odors

To solve excessive perspiration:

  • Wear socks made of natural materials like cotton, and shoes that allow your feet to breathe to help reduce the growth of bacteria that cause bad
  • If you have stubborn perspiration, an antiperspirant spray can help, but shoe hygiene is also important. Try using a spray deodorant for shoes or insoles made from activated charcoal to help eliminate bad odour. Also, try wearing different pairs of shoes on alternating days, this will allow them to dry out before wearing them again.[1]
  • Keep your toenails short, clean and remove any hard skin you may have with a foot file. Damp, hard skin can become soggy and can be a breeding ground for bacteria.[1]
